Ben and Jerry's Sweet Gaia Capitalism
"Ben and Jerry’s Product Mission is to make, distribute & sell the finest quality all natural ice cream & euphoric concoctions with a continued commitment to incorporating wholesome, natural ingredients and promoting business practices that respect the Earth and the Environment. It's Economic Mission is to operate the Company on a sustainable financial basis of profitable growth, increasing value for stakeholders & expanding opportunities for employees. It's Social Mission is to operate the company in a way that actively recognizes the central role that business plays in society by initiating innovative ways to improve the quality of life locally, nationally & internationally.
Central To The Mission Of Ben & Jerry’s… is the belief that all three parts must thrive equally in a manner that commands deep respect for individuals in and outside the company and supports the communities of which they are a part.
Ben and Jerry’s has a progressive, nonpartisan social mission that seeks to meet human needs and eliminate injustices in our local, national and international communities by integrating these concerns into our day-to-day business activities. Our focus is on children and families, the environment and sustainable agriculture on family farms.
Capitalism and the wealth it produces do not create opportunity for everyone equally. We recognize that the gap between the rich and the poor is wider than at anytime since the 1920's.We strive to create economic opportunities for those who have been denied them and to advance new models of economic justice that are sustainable and replicable.
By definition, the manufacturing of products creates waste. We strive to minimize our negative impact on the environment.
The growing of food is overly reliant on the use of toxic chemicals and other methods that are unsustainable. We support sustainable and safe methods of food production that reduce environmental degradation, maintain the productivity of the land over time, and support the economic viability of family farms and rural communities.
We seek and support nonviolent ways to achieve peace and justice. We believe government resources are more productively used in meeting human needs than in building and maintaining weapons systems.
We strive to show a deep respect for human beings inside and outside our company and for the communities in which they live.”

Ben & Jerry’s Energy Statement: Ben & Jerry’s is committed to reducing its carbon dioxide emissions by targeting a 10% reduction in carbon dioxide from its manufacturing facilities by 2007 over 2002 levels. Scientists began to recognize in the early 60’s that an increase in greenhouse gases would make the earth warmer. Carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and other manmade chemicals are the primary culprits. While each of these gases has significant environmental impacts, carbon dioxide is the most prevalent in the atmosphere. Industry accounts for approximately one-third of all carbon dioxide emissions.
To achieve this goal, we have developed five key areas of focus to reduce our energy consumption and to strive toward technological advances to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions.
… evaluate refrigeration systems for maximum efficiency.
… seek assistance from outside sources including Efficiency Vermont to identify energy efficiency opportunities.
… expand the current energy tracking system to include a calculation of greenhouse Gas emissions.
… evaluate alternative energy options.
… provide extensive educational information to our employees, customers and suppliers regarding actions everyone can take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Through it’s educational programs, Ben and Jerry’s believes it will have a positive effect on the reduction of greenhouse gases.
